Welcome to the homepage of
CHS-TV has earned state honors for the 17th consecutive year. The
Carthage High School organization was notified by e-mail Tuesday, April
19 that it was awarded First Place in the Texas Association of
Educational Technology Media Fair. The students competed in the
Digital Video (Grades 9-12) category.
Titled "Automatic," the short video uses digital stop-motion animation,
utilizing a technique not tried before at CHS-TV. Physical items were
moved by hand, inch by inch, and individual frames were edited together
to create the illusion of movement. This technique, in photographic
film production, was first discovered a century ago, but using digital
video to create the effects proved challenging and exciting for the
students.
Senior students involved from the advanced broadcast journalism classes
were Chris Caldwell, Joshua Franks, Skyler Harris, Nathan Lenox,
Courtney Ross and Eric Seguin. Juniors were Christina Beechum, Ashley
Dyson, Adam Johnson, Jade Lewis, Tomeka Williams and Whitney
Williamson. These students will be recognized at the annual Carthage
High School Awards Assembly, and the video will be broadcast on an
upcoming edition of "Carthage Schools Present."
"Automatic" resembles a live-action "animated cartoon" of sorts. It
depicts a group of "lazy students" and their "lazy teacher" (instructor
Donnie Pitchford playing that part) who must prepare the cluttered
CHS-TV studio for business. After the teacher leaves the students to
do all the work, two of them locate a mysterious red button labeled
"Automatic Setup," and decide to push it. Instantly, it's "lights,
cameras, action" as studio equipment begins to seemingly move on its
own power, rolling, twirling, and sliding into place. All this action
is accompanied by cartoon-like music. The end result is a perfectly
prepared TV studio, to the amazement of the teacher. Overall, the
project was fun to produce, and helped the students learn some new
skills.
